Bird House Building Plans: Planning Before You Start

There are various types of bird house building plans available. Depending on the source you may need to purchase the plan, or find a less detailed one for free. The plans may sometimes come in the form of a bird house kit or a decorative bird house plan. While choosing a bird house building plan you also need to take into account whether the area you plan to place your bird house in is already conducive to attracting birds. If you are not sure then you should initially start by planting some flowers and bushes near the potential nesting spot. Planting flowers and bushes helps to attract insects to the garden, providing a food source for any potential new nesters. If possible, it also helps to plant a few trees. If your nesting area is not favorable to the feeding habits of the birds you are trying to attract, it is not likely that the birds will choose to nest there.

Other Planning

Once you have prepared the potential nesting area of your garden to be a good feeding spot for birds, you should then move on to choosing the correct bird house building plan for the specific species of bird you are trying to attract. You will find certain plans are geared towards a specific type of bird, such as bluebird house plans, although quite often you will be able to find a bird house that will be suited to more than one type bird. This allows you to build a few of the same house allowing multiple species of birds and other animals to nest in your garden.

Once you have prepared your area and chosen your bird house building plan, you need to purchase the materials to actually build the bird house. Cedar wood is normally the best wood to choose as it is a natural insect repellant. Also remember to consider buying a pole to mount your bird house on to keep the occupants and eggs protected from predators. Once you have completed your bird house using your bird house building plan and the birds have successfully nested in the house for a season, you should clean out the house fully so it is ready for the next nesting season. This includes clearing and cleaning out all left over nesting items and cleaning the inside of the house with a ten percent bleach mixture.
