Bird House Building Plans: Finding the
Right Ones
If you love birds and would like to attract
them to your garden the best option is to build a bird house.
As different species of birds have different preferences,
people will often build a few types of bird houses so that they
can attract different types of birds to their garden. Before
going ahead and starting work on a bird house you should find a
set of bird house building plans for the species of bird you
wish to attract. It is possible to find free birdhouse plans
from bird magazines or various bird society websites. The bird
house building plans should include step by step instructions
to allow you to construct the bird house, as well as advise on
the best placement to attract your species of bird. Bluebirds
are an example of a bird species that uses other birds’ nests.
Because of the influx of urbanization it is becoming
increasingly hard for these birds to find a place to nest and
so there numbers have been slowly declining. These birds in
particular can really benefit from a human built bird
house.
Materials and
Placement
Although bird house building plans will
usually be designed for a specific species of bird as they all
have different preferences, there is some overlap. For example,
you may get a bird house building plan that will work well for
several different species of small bird, while another plan may
encompass various species of larger birds. You should usually
choose to construct your bird house out of wood, such as cedar.
This will naturally deter insects from making their home in
your bird house, and in this way avoid the possibility of pest
chasing your birds away.
Bird house building plans often mention
placing your bird house on top of a pole. This stops animals
that can normally climb into birds nests, such as cats and
snakes, from gaining access to the eggs or nesting chicks. The
bird house building plans will usually make it clear how high
to make the pole, so that it is high enough to keep the
predators out but still low enough for you to be able to see
into the nest if you want keep progress on its
development.
If you wanting to be able to open the front
of the nest to allow you to look in and watch the progress of
the nestlings, look for bird house building plans that include
a hinge mounted front with a clear plastic interior within.
This will allow you access to the nest without actually
disturbing the occupants.
